Questions

What is a passphrase?

A passphrase is a password made of words. The words are random, so nobody can guess them. A passphrase is easier to remember and to type than a string of marks.

How many words do I need?

Use six words or more. Each word adds almost 13 bits. Six words give about 77 bits. Use more words for a very important account.

Where do the words come from?

The words come from the EFF large word list. It has 7776 words. The page picks each word at random with the secure random numbers of your browser.

Why add a digit or a capital letter?

Some sites ask for them. The page adds them only when you ask. A digit adds a few bits. A capital letter on every word adds no bits, because the rule is fixed.

Does my password go to a server?

No. Your device does the work. The page does not save or send your password. Read more about privacy.

Is there a limit?

No. You can use the page as many times as you want.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and there are no ads.
